HYANNIS, Mass., — The American Red Cross is proud to announce Casey Sherman, author of the best seller The Finest Hours will be honored at the 14th Annual Heroes Breakfast which takes place April 13, 2016 in Hyannis.

“We are so pleased to honor Casey Sherman for bringing the public’s attention to the story of the Coast Guard’s most daring sea rescue off the coast of Chatham in February 1952. The Coast Guard crew did not think they were doing anything heroic, rescuing the oil tanker crew huddled inside the broken half of the SS Pendleton during one of the most dangerous storms in the area’s history. Casey will join us in paying tribute to this past year’s heroes, just as he paid tribute to those Cape heroes from over 60 years ago in his beloved book,” said Hilary Greene, Executive Director of the Cape, Islands, and Southeast Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross.

Nominations are now closed and a committee is busy selecting this year’s awardees. Mr. Sherman will be the Special Guest Presenter and Speaker at the event in addition to receiving the Red Cross Public Service Hero award for his work in telling the story of this brave Coast Guard crew.

“I’m honored to have been asked to speak at the 2016 Heroes Breakfast. My book and film The Finest Hours shines the light on a heroic sea rescue from long ago but there are so many unsung heroes doing amazing and selfless things in our community each and every day and it is wonderful to have their good work recognized at an event such as this,” Casey Sherman, best-selling author of The Finest Hours.

Every day the Red Cross is in the community, assisting people after home fires, educating residents about fire safety, and teaching health and safety classes to help citizens be ready in the event of an emergency. The Red Cross wants to honor those in our community giving of themselves to enrich others.

JetBlue is the presenting sponsor of the 14th Annual Heroes Breakfast, which will be held April 13, 2016 at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis.

The Disney Movie The Finest Hours, adapted from Casey Sherman’s book (co-authored with Michael J. Tougias), will be released nationwide January 29th.
