Vineyard Girls Top Tennis Seed in South; Barnstable Boys No. 2

OAK BLUFFS — Each time Nina Bramhall’s Vineyarders were tested this spring, the girls stepped into the breach, rose to the challenge and got the job done.

The end result? An undefeated regular season for the Martha’s Vineyard’s girls’ tennis team (17-0), an Eastern Athletic Conference crown and the top seed in the MIAA Division 3 South

girls’ team tennis tournament.

For nearly every Cape Cod high school tennis team — girls or boys — that qualified for the postseason, tournament matches will commence tomorrow (Thursday, June 4). For the Vineyard, however, as well as #3 seed Monomoy Regional (17-2), the tourney begins on Monday, June 8. The Vineyarders received a bye from the first round of play and will head straight to the Div. 3 quarterfinals against the winner of the first round match between (8) Norwell and (9) Fairhaven. One of those two teams will head to Oak Bluffs on Monday, June 8 at 4:00 pm to face the unbeaten island girls.

Monomoy also received a bye from the first round and will face the winner of (6) Ursuline Academy and the 11th-seeded St. John Paul II Lady Lions (7-10) on Monday (June 8) at home in the quarterfinals.

In Division 2 South girls’ tennis, Nauset, Sandwich and Falmouth High will face some fairly stiff competition this postseason. Falmouth (9-7) is seeded 15th and faces 18th seed Milton (8-8) tomorrow at Falmouth High at 4:00 pm. Sandwich (9-8), the 16th seed, will face 17th seed Hanover tomorrow at Sandwich High School at 4:00 pm. Nauset, the 8th seed, received a first round bye and will head straight to the Div. 2 Quarterfinals against #9 seed Medfield and the match will be played at the Orleans Elementary School at 3:00 pm tomorrow.

Perennial Division 1 South powerhouse Barnstable (15-2) received a number 4 seeding and received a first-round bye. The Red Raiders will host #13 Walpole (10-8) tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the quarterfinals round.

The Barnstable High boys’ tennis team (16-1) was the sole other Division 1 tennis team on the Cape that earned a tournament berth. The Red Raider boys, who fell only to Division 2 top seed Duxbury during the regular season, will host #15 Newton North (8-8) tomorrow at 4:00 pm.

In Division 2 South, the Nauset Warrior boys were the sole team from the Cape to earn a postseason bid. At 10-8, Nauset took a 12th seed and will face 5th-seeded Scituate High (15-2) at Scituate tomorrow at 2:30 pm in a first round match-up.

In the Division 3 South boys’ tennis pairings, the Cape had six teams qualify, including Monomoy, St. John Paul II, Bourne, Sturgis East, Mashpee and Martha’s Vineyard.

St. John Paul II finished at 15-1 on the campaign and earned a #4 seed and will face #13 Monomoy (10-9) in Hyannis tomorrow (Thursday, June 4)  at 4:00 pm. The Bourne High boys (12-6) were seeded 7th and will host #10 Sturgis East (6-4) tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Mashpee (10-10), seeded #14, has its work cut out for it when it hits the road Friday to #3 seed Cohasset (16-1) for a 4:00 pm start. The Martha’s Vineyard boys (11-5) took a sixth seed and will face #11 Sacred Heart (6-4) in Oak Bluffs tomorrow at 4:00 pm.
