COTUIT – When the dust finally settled after Sturgis East’s Paddo Devine cranked out a Hendrix-like rendition of the Star Spangled Banner pre-game on his electric guitar, Sturgis West cranked out 13 hits and plated 17 runs at Lowell Park in the Navigators’ first-ever win over its cross-village, sibling-school rival, Sturgis East.
Sturgis West’s Wesley Todoroff went the distance on the mound for the Navigators, as he threw three shutout innings to start and then allowed just six runs the rest of the way with three strikeouts. Todoroff gave up nine hits, including a fourth-inning solo homer to East first baseman Cooper Gavin, but it was not nearly enough.
West plated nine runs in the second inning on three walks, one hit batsman and three errors and that was all Todoroff would need to coast through to the end. West tacked on eight more runs and East starter Jared Joy took the loss after a solid first inning caved into the second inning deluge of West runs.
Kevin Agostinelli and Gavin both went 2-4 on the day and Kyle Coolidge and Evan Taubert each belted triples for The Storm.
West’s Johnny Ryan went 3-5 and Nick Pepe went 4-5 to pace the West hitting attack. Max O’Hare and JP LaBarge each added two hits for the Navigators.
Bruning Shuts Down Bridgewater-Raynham Bats as Barnstable Upsets State’s #3 Team
Junior righty Ryan Bruning went the distance and struck out three batters as he scattered six hits and allowed just one run in the sixth en route to a major 4-1 win for the Barnstable High baseball team (8-9) over the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans. Bruning walked only two in the solid effort on the mound.
Ranked as high as number three in the state by some polls, the Trojans (15-2) had previously lost only to Lincoln-Sudbury coming into Thursday’s Old Colony League affair with the rival Red Raiders. The win for Barnstable gives it at least a chance to tie for the Old Colony League championship title.
“It was a great pitching performance from Ryan (Bruning),” said first-year head coach Ryan Kinski. “And great defense from JR (DiSarcina) and Lucas (Atsalis) and we had some great baserunning.”
In fact, Barnstable mustered only three hits in total in the game. But where the hosts did not let opportunity go to waste was on seven walks and a hit batsman, combined with a pair of stolen bases, five passed balls and three wild pitches to give itself and its pitcher Bruning enough for the win.
Andrew Atsalis and cousin Lukas Atsalis and Alex Mercado each had hits for the Red & White.
Bridgewater-Raynham senior Andrew Noviello took the loss for the guests.
Barnstable staked Bruning just a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jackson Badot led off with a walk and stole second base and came home on Andrew Atsalis’ base-knock. Still ahead by only a 1-0 margin in the bottom of the fifth, Barnstable scored two more runs – both unearned and both with two outs – on a calamity of wild pitches and passed balls.
Barnstable faces Brockton at home on Tuesday.
