HYANNIS — The same thing happened last year.
The Sturgis West Navigators (1-0), coached by former Barnstable High Red Raider stalwart Parish Pina, defeated the defending Cape & Islands League champion Sturgis East Storm (0-1) Thursday afternoon at the Hyannis Golf Club, 30.5 to 23.5.
Sturgis East fell to rival West last fall to open the season before going on a seven-game win streak and capturing its first-ever league championship title. The Storm finished 9-5 last season.
But West — even without graduated seniors Liam Doherty, Nicholas Parsons, Christopher Shields — proved formidable once again.
West’s Curtis Merritt, Sam Goldberg and Justin Howard each took victories for the Navigators to lead the way. Merritt, competing out of the number two slot, defeated East’s Joey Colesano, 6.5 to 2.5; Goldberg defeated Vinny Collucci, 5-4; and Howard defeated sophomore Andrew Williams, 6-3.
East junior co-captain Emily Rodricks, competing at the number one spot, notched the sole victory for The Storm with a 5-4 win over West’s number one Samar Ghai.
West’s Nick Harold tied East co-captain Mitch Burns, 4.5-4.5 in the number three slot and Shane Canty tied East Co-Captain Jared Joy by the same score, 4.5-4.5.
Medalists were Rodricks and Ghai who both shot a five-over par 40 in the 35-par match.
