COTUIT – Beleagured with an exhausted pitching staff, the Sturgis East Storm baseball team (5-5) nevertheless got back on its feet Saturday at Lowell Park with a twinbill sweep of the visiting Parker Charter School from Devens.
The Storm defeated its guests by scores of 11-9 in the twinbill opener and 8-3 in the nightcap.
On three days’ rest and still feeling the effects of a week-long flu, The Storm’s Cooper Gavin reached down deep and tossed a complete-game victory for the hosts, striking out 11 batters while walking just four. He helped himself considerably in the effort by staging a 3-4 day at the plate with a double and RBI.
Storm freshman catcher Andrew Williams also went 3-4 in game one, while shortstop Ryan Havey went 3-3 with a double. All totaled, The Storm rapped out 13 hits.
With one out in the top of the seventh inning, having allowed one run to Parker Charter School that narrowed the Storm’s lead to 11-9, Gavin settled with the tying runs on base to get two pop flies to end the threat and secure the win.
Parker Charter’s Devin McNamara (2-2), Matt Bedard (3-4), Kyle McNamara (2-5) and Jared Penna (2-4) each collected multiple hits off of Gavin.
In game two, The Storm’s Kyle Coolidge raced to the ballpark after taking the SATs and he, too, went the distance on the mound, tossing a complete-game two-hitter while striking out 10 batters. He allowed just two earned runs in the 8-3 finale.
Coolidge got all the run support he would need in the first inning in a rally he himself was very much a big part of.
Havey led off with a single for The Storm, followed by Joey Colesano reaching via the fielder’s choice and then Gavin singled to put two men on. A passed ball advanced both runners and Coolidge then laced an RBI-single as did Kevin Agostinelli and Jared Joy to give the hosts a 4-0 early lead.
Havey and Williams were the sole Storm players to garner multiple hits in the nightcap, with Havey going 2-4 and Williams going 2-3. Seamus Devine, who went 1-4 in both games, drove in runs with each of his hits on the day.
