St. John Paul Lady Lions Can’t Solve New Bedford Voke

HYANNIS – For the second time this season the Greater New Bedford Voke girls basketball team did something no other team has been able to do: defeat the St. John Paul II girls.

The Lady Lions hosted Greater New Bedford Voke last night at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center and Voke went home not unpleased with a 44-25 win.

The loss drops the Lions to 13-3 and they face Martha’s Vineyard on the road tomorrow afternoon.

The Lions’ Olivia Bengston was the high scorer for the Blue & Gold girls with nine points and she added six rebounds to her effort, while junior captain Tori Gibson scored eight points. Sophomore point guard Jess Tierney had five points and five assists while Haylee Whiteley pulled down 10 rebounds.

Rileigh Avila was the high scorer for Voke, with 17 points and Nakira Examond tacked on 15 for the visitors.

St. John Paul II lessened the deficit of the original meeting between the two teams earlier this season, but still Voke got the upper hand last night and never relinquished it below a nine-point spread.

“We are getting closer,” St. John Paul II head coach Mike Tierney said. “We stayed with them longer this time around.”

Voke led 15-5 after the first quarter, 22-13 at the half and 32-21 after three frames. The Lions looked like they were going to put together a comeback run in the fourth quarter but it did not seem like anyone could miss for the guests as they outscored the hosts, 12-4 in the final stanza.

Greater New Bedford Voke remains undefeated on the season.

“We’re not ready for prime time yet but we’re working on it,” Tierney said. “We need more games with opponents like them.”
