SOUTH YARMOUTH – The St. John Paul II boys’ lacrosse team clinched a postseason berth and played the role of spoiler Wednesday afternoon with a 16-11 win over Sturgis West (5-7), as the Navigators were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss in what ended up being their last game of the season at John Simpkins Field.
St. John Paul II’s Gil Bach put up some lofty numbers with four goals and six assists to pace the Blue & Gold front line attack, while teammate Matt O’Connor picked up seven points with a hat trick and four assists. Bach now has 53 goals on the 2015 campaign as St. John Paul II climbed to 11-7.
“It was a win and we’re in situation,” said Sturgis West head coach Jon Peterson, a former Barnstable High football, ice hockey and lacrosse star. “They could have folded but they fought. We almost pulled it out and we had three different occasions where we were within two but that’s it. It was a good bid to get this far with three overtime wins in a row.”
St. John Paul II received a superlative game in goal from Griffin Guerin who made 16 saves including eight in the second quarter.
The Lions also received another top-shelf game from Timmy Jordan who netted a hat trick and tacked on two assists.
Sturgis West’s Mike Noonan was exceptional throughout and netted five goals in all, followed by Cam Perkins with four markers and Chase Palmer and John Russell each with one.
“We fought,” Coach Peterson said. “But they were the better team.”
