HYANNIS – When one of your senior captains is missing from the lineup, it’s usually difficult to replace that leadership on short notice, never mind win a key game.
But Barnstable High boys’ volleyball junior co-captain Scott Sawyer Jr. stepped into the breach and then some Friday night, leading the Red Raiders to a key, 3-1 victory over the Quincy High Presidents.
Sawyer put up career-best numbers in the victory, posting a phenomenal 27 kills on offense and 20 digs on defense, likely a school record for the boys’ volleyball program at Barnstable High (could not be confirmed by publication deadline).
“He had a day,” said Barnstable boys’ volleyball head coach Marylou Martin.
The Red Raiders won a tight contest in the first set, 25-23, and then followed with that same score in the second set, 25-23. Barnstable fell in the third set, however, 25-15, only to turn it around in the fourth and final set with a 25-17 victory.
Harrison West-Mather came up with 28 assists and added six digs while Jamie Walsh had seven digs, as did Matt Teague.
Barnstable is 4-3 on the season now and next faces Taunton at home on Monday, April 27.
