MATTAPOISETT – The Martha’s Vineyard girls’ tennis team proved once and for all yesterday it is the team to beat this season as the islanders captured the Division 3 South Sectional Championship title, 3-2, over #2 seed Dover-Sherborn.
Martha’s Vineyard is now a perfect 20-0 on the campaign and advances to Monday’s MIAA Division 3 State Quarterfinals against North Sectional Champion Lynnfield at Newton South High School at 3:30 pm. Lynnfield is also a perfect 20-0 on the season.
Dover-Sherborn’s season came to an end with the loss as it finished at 17-2.
Once again, the estimable Samantha Potter dominated at number one singles as she defeated Alex Blizard, 6-0, 6-2, and Potter’s win set the tone for a clean sweep in all three singles matches for the Vineyard girls.
Kat Roberts took number two singles from Dover-Sherborn’s Kelly Arani, 6-4, 6-1, and Lizzie Williamson followed with an almost identical score with her win over Olivia Barbier, 6-4, 6-0.
The Vineyard’s first doubles team – Charlotte Potter Josie Iadicicco — lost a close match to Meredith Allen and Mary Kate Forte, 6-3, 6-3, but the damage by the Vineyard in the singles matches had already sealed the win.
M-V’s Madison McBride and Alison Diagle fell in the number two doubles match to Liz Montesano and Katie Mathsen, 6-2, 6-3.
