Nantucket Nine Hold On, Edge Sturgis East at Lowell Park; Holzman Mows Down Duxbury

COTUIT – Ahead 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the visiting Nantucket Whalers almost saw that lead dissipate but held on for a 5-4 win over the host Sturgis East Storm Thursday afternoon at Lowell Park.

The Storm did not go down without a fight as Sturgis East freshman catcher Andrew Williams led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk, followed by a pinch-hit single from Evan Taubert. A ground out by Joey Colesano advanced both runners into scoring position and then senior shortstop Ryan Havey delivered an RBI-basehit to narrow the deficit to 5-2, Nantucket still on top.

Storm leftfielder Kevin Agostinelli then lasered a two-run single to make it 5-4. Seamus Devine was inserted as a pinch runner for Agostinelli and made his way all the way to third base with two outs but the chance for a comeback evaporated on a game-ending ground-out.

Junior righty Jared Joy got the starting nod for Sturgis East and went six innings before being taken out for Kyle Coolidge who got tabbed with the hard-luck loss. Joy fanned six batters, walked none and allowed four earned runs while Coolidge allowed one earned run and offered up five hits.

Senior righty Nate Leibowitz went the distance for the Whalers and got the win. He allowed four runs on eight hits and walked just one with a pair of hit batsmen. He struck out eight over the course of his seven innings of work.

Mark Agostinelli led The Storm with a 2-3 day at the plate and had one RBI.

Nantucket leadoff man Gradyn Higgins went 3-4 on the day.

The Storm will be back at it again on Saturday (May 2) for a doubleheader at Lowell Park against the Parker Charter School.
