BOURNE — On the heels of a tough loss to Scituate Saturday, the Sandwich High girls ice hockey team got back on track Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Franklin.
Senior co-captain Katie Lowry scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while senior goaltender Allison Hir notched her first career shutout in net.
After a scoreless first period in a game that Sandwich head coach Steve Noll characterized as “chippy,” it was Lady Knights’ junior defenseman Katie Towey who put her squad on the scoreboard at the 2:15 mark to make it 1-0. Thanks in large part to Hir’s performance in net (16 saves), that’s all the Lady Knights would need, ultimately, for the victory. The Lady Knights are now 5-6 on the season.
Towey’s first period goal was assisted by senior defenseman Alex Glynn and senior captain Nicole Martin. Martin would end up with three key assists on the afternoon.
One minute after Lowry’s goal, Sandwich junior forward Christina O’Neil made it 2-0 (assisted by Lowry) when she found the back of the net on a power play. Things out on the ice started heating up once the host Lady Knights went ahead, 2-0. All totaled, the visiting Panthers incurred three second period penalties, one for interference and two for hooking, while the Knights’ Martin got called for cross-checking.
“It was a very chippy game, Franklin is a physical team,” Coach Noll said. “The (Sandwich) girls responded with some power play goals… we controlled the ice, we controlled the zone time but we didn’t get as many shots as we cold have generated.”
In the third period, it was Lowry who ensured that the Franklin team would have little chance of staging even a semblance of a comeback.
Lowry scored the first of her two goals on the day at the 11:00 mark of the third frame, assisted by senior forward Annabelle White and Martin. Martin picked up her third assist when Lowry made it 4-0 less than four minutes later (White also got an assist).
“We set up well, we just did a fantastic job getting the puck out of the zone,” Noll said.
Sandwich (6-5) heads to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday (Jan. 14) for a 4:30 pm game. As of today, the Vineyarders stand at 4-2-2 on the season.
