HARWICH – Ryan Havey went five complete innings on the mound for Sturgis East Thursday afternoon, while Jared Joy came on in relief to close it down in an 11-3 win for The Storm over Cape Tech.
Havey scattered six hits and walked one while allowing one earned run. He struck out seven. Joy went two innings in relief and allowed two runs (one earned) while fanning one batter.
Sturgis East is now 3-1 on the season while Cape Tech fell to 0-4 in this non-league affair.
The Storm plated four runs in the top of the third inning on hits from Mark Agostinelli, Paddo Devine, a walk to Hunter Woodbury, a Havey RBI-baseknock and a sac fly RBI from Joey Colesano. Kyle Coolidge also plated a run on an infield error.
East put another pair of runs across in the top of the fourth inning to make it 6-0 before Cape Tech picked up an unearned run on Havey.
The Storm’s Cooper Gavin led off the fifth with a double and scored on a Joy sac fly to leftfield and then the wheels came slightly off for the hosts in the top of the sixth when East plated another four runs to make it 11-1. Tech picked up a pair of runs on reliever Joy in the bottom of the sixth, but the righty got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the threat.
Cape Tech’s Josh Meservey rapped out a pair of hits for the hosts. Havey went 2-5 from the leadoff spot, while Joy went 2-3 on the day with a double. Agostinelli had abanner day at he plate for The Storm as he went 4-4 and scored a pair of runs. Devine went 2-3.
Sturgis East returns to action Saturday against Nantucket in an all-important Cape & Islands League affair.
Cape Tech hopes to get on the winning track when it faces Greater New Bedford Voke on Monday (April 20) at 4:00 pm.
