BOURNE – After the Bourne offense was stymied for much of the game, the Canalmen broke through with two, late, fourth-quarter goals, sending Friday’s game with South Coast Conference rival Fairhaven into overtime.
After a pair of big saves from goalie Sam Lyons in the extra period, Tom Glinski recorded the game-winner with less than two minutes to play, lifting the Canalmen to a 9-8 victory over the Blue Devils.
While Bourne (8-3) was on the man-advantage, Glinski worked the ball behind the net, before popping on the right side and slipping a ball past Fairhaven goalie Justin Borges to the far post for the game winner.
“All the time we work that, the two man game down low and they were overplaying the other guy and I had it wide open,” Glinski said, after the game.
It was the second goal of the game for Glinski, while Jake Girard scored a team-high three goals. Dawson Prophett also scored twice in the win.
Glinski’s overtime goal was made possible thanks to two back-to-back saves from Lyons in the opening minute of the overtime period after Fairhaven won the opening faceoff.
“I never overlook Sam, he’s’ one of the best goalies I’ve ever seen and I’ve been happy with him since he was a freshman, and I’ve always been impressed with his saves,” Bourne coach Tim Crowley said. “It’s not like the kids are hitting him in the stick or the chest, he’s actually making the save.”
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter, the Fairhaven offense woke up, dishing off three consecutive goals, tying the game at three right before the half.
The Blue Devils offense continue to find success in the third quarter, scoring four of the first five goals in the second half to take a 7-4 lead with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter.
While Fairhaven was putting together offense success, their defense shutdown the Canalmen attack, surrendering only one goal in nearly 17 minutes of play to build their largest lead of the game.
“They had some great defensive players out there, knocking down some balls, knocking down some passes,” Crowley said. “They did a great job of slowing everything down and stopping us from scoring down low.”
Bourne finally broke through twice in the waning minutes of the third quarter, notching goals from Shaun Griffin and Dawson Prophett, cutting the lead down to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils notched just one goal in the fourth — an early tally from Glenn Leung — before the Canalmen pushed across goals from Prophett and Jake Girard with four minutes to play the game.
“We just come out and play lacrosse, that’s why I tell my guys to play the basic fundamentals and you’ll succeed out there,” Crowley explained. “We had two minutes left in the game and I just tell them to play lacrosse, they are all athletes.”
Girard nearly had the game winner with less than two minutes remaining while Bourne was on the man-advantage, but his shot rang off the crossbar sending the game into overtime.
