FALMOUTH – On the day that their seniors were honored, the Falmouth High girls’ ice hockey team collectively looked like the most confident and self-assured team in the region.
Facing Warwick, Rhode Island as part of the Cape Cod Classic Tournament late yesterday afternoon at the Falmouth Ice Arena, the Clipper seniors were honored prior to faceoff and in a matter of minutes thereafter were on top and on top to stay.
With 8:05 left in the first period, sophomore forward Ericka Meissner did her elder senior teammates proud when she banged in a rebound off a Madison Haberl slap shot to make it 1-0.Five minutes later, Haberl notched another point when she rifled a screamer past Warwick goalie Erin Vermilye to make it 2-0 (assisted by Meissner and Hannah Callahan).
The first period ended just like that, with Falmouth ahead 2-0, but there was much more damage to be inflicted by the hosts even though they unknowingly had all they would need for the win.
Just 2:33 into the second frame (12:27), freshman phenom McKenzie Haberl, Madison’s younger sister, smoked a rocket at Vermilye that bounced off her pads directly onto the waiting stick of freshman forward Emma Callahan who made it 3-0 (Kelly Ferreira assist).
Close to 10 minutes elapsed before Falmouth would strike again, this time, appropriately so, it was Ferreira who took a slap-shot rebound and stuffed it in the net to make it 4-0 (3:11, assisted by McKenzie Haberl and Hannah Callahan).
In the third frame, ahead 4-0, Warwick got on the board (3:54) with a rebound slam-in by junior forward Madison Balutowski but Ferreira would erase any worries when she scored her team’s fifth and final goal in an empty net as time ticked down to the finale.
Senior goalie Margaret got the win in net with 20 saves.
Falmouth plays tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 19) against Archbishop Williams at 3:00 pm in the final girls’ game of the 2015 CC Classic.
