Falmouth Clipper Icemen Rock Brockton in 6-2 Tilt

FALMOUTH — It may not be the team’s official theme song just yet, but whenever the heavy classic beat of House of Pain’s Jump Around  kicks in at the Falmouth Ice Arena, it makes you think twice.

Just how much better will the Falmouth High boys’ hockey team get this season and who will be the next opponent to feel that pain?

With the ghosts of a heart-rending early season now fully exorcised, the Clippers readily dispatched the visiting big city Brockton Boxers last night, 6-2, all in preparation for tonight’s much-anticipated rematch with the rival Barnstable High Red Raiders in Hyannis at 7:00 pm.

The arena rocked at the 11:00-minute mark of the first period when the red-hot sophomore wing Pat Coyne snatched the puck near his own blue line, weaved through a throng of frozen-solid Brockton skaters and whirled straight in on Boxer goalie Franco Massaro and deposited the puck in the top shelf for a 1-0 lead.

It only made it five times more exciting when the speed-skating Coyne flipped the puck in the net and then flipped mid-air seven feet into the boards behind the net, with his teammates swarming him afterward.

Less than three minutes later, Coyne did it again.

Marc Rocheleau laser-beamed a slap shot off of Massaro’s pads, Matt Schreiner took a whack at the rebound and Coyne joined the crease party just in time to drive it home for a 2-0 lead at 8:10.

A minute later, with the Clipper peanut gallery stirring itself into a frenzy in the stands, sophomore Owen Higgins took the puck all alone and fired a wrist shot past an infuriated Massaro for a 3-0 onslaught.

Brockton, understandably, took a time out.

Yes, in the second period, Brockton’s Ian Peterson put the Boxers on the scoreboard as he got one past senior goalie Kyle Storey, but Higgins matched Coyne with his second goal to keep it at 4-1 (7:57/assisted by Isiah Lineweaver and Coyne).

In the third frame, Nick Marston and Jake Miller joined the Clipper scoring club, both goals assisted by sophomore defenseman Cam Tobey and Coyne on Miller’s shot. Justin Allen added a goal for Brockton but it was not nearly enough to put a dent in in Storey’s 15-save night.

All totaled, Falmouth peppered the Brockton net 32 times in contrast.

Falmouth, the Atlantic Coast League champion, is now 9-6-2 on the season.

Still, Falmouth head coach Paul Moore said he thinks his team can tighten up the reins a notch and put up still a better performance down the road, sooner if not later.

“We had a pretty good start,” he said. “But I think we faltered near the end of the game… wasn’t a very clean game for us. But I’ll take the victory.”
