Falmouth Clipper Girls Fall to Arlington Catholic

BOURNE – Enjoying the hype and attention of a mid-season roll, the Falmouth High School girls’ hockey team did something yesterday afternoon they have not done much of lately.

They lost.

On the heels of a 1-0 blanking the previous day in Hyannis, the top-ranked Arlington Catholic girls defeated the host Clippers, 3-1, at the Gallo Ice Arena. The game had to be played at a neutral site due to some quirk in MIAA regulations.

Down 1-0 after the first period, Falmouth got a huge momentum boost when senior assistant captain Kelly Ferreira stole an Arlington Catholic pass and roared toward the goal, one-timing it past the guests’ goaltender Jasmine Mucci.

Ferreira’s goal was unassisted and came at the 8:02 mark of the second period to tie it 1-1, but that was all the hosts could muster. Arlington Catholic bombarded Falmouth goalie Maddie Scavotto throughout this affair, shooting more than an estimated 77 percent more shots on goal than the Clippers.

Falmouth had a power play opportunity a few minutes later on an Arlington Catholic slashing call, but the visitors killed the penalty.

Six minutes later in the second period, with the game deadlocked at 1-1, Arlington Catholic’s Erin Healy scored the eventual game-winner on a goal assisted by Jessica Piracini and Adriena Rossini. With the score now 2-1 in Arlington Catholic’s favor, Falmouth had its work cut out for it.

But nearly halfway through the third period, Rossini made sure that redemption belonged to her squad as she scored at the 8:46 mark on an assist from Healy.

With the score 3-1, there was little Falmouth could do but call a time-out with a little more than a minute left in the game.

Falmouth falls to 8-3-1 on the season and is 3-1 in the Southeastern Massachusetts Girls Hockey League – Coastal Division. The Clippers are in third place in the Coastal Division behind Duxbury and undefeated Barnstable (4-0).

The Clippers next face a tough Hingham team for a second time this season, on the road on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
