The week’s CapeCod.Com Athlete of the Week was nearly impossible to narrow down to one, thus there are three: Bourne High School’s Austin Braley, Sturgis East’s Jacob Tobey and Cape Cod Academy’s Danny Crossen.
Austin Braley, Cape Cod’s leading ice hockey goal-scorer this season was a one-man wrecking crew on Saturday night in the 33rd Annual Cape Cod Canal Cup. Not merely did his Bourne Canalmen win the Cup for the first time since 2006, but more importantly it was largely due to Braley’s hat trick in a game that was tied 3-3 and went to sudden death overtime. The following night on Sunday, Braley did it again, netting a hat trick to help his team defeat Greater New Bedford Voke and clinch a postseason tournament berth.
Sturgis East’s senior captain Jacob Tobey hit a remarkable milestone last Thursday night, breaching the 1,000-career-points milestone after scoring a game-high 28 points in a road win at Walpole vs. Norfolk Aggie. On Saturday, in a tough loss back in Hyannis against the St. John Paul II Lions, Tobey again was the game’s overall leading scorer with 24 points, leaving him with a career total of 1,028 points and counting.
And on Saturday night, Cape Cod’s 3rd top scorer Danny Crossen, a Cape Cod Academy student-athlete who plays for the co-op ice hockey team of Cape Tech and Cape Cod Academy, netted six – yes, that’s six – goals in the Crusaders’ 8-2 win over Wareham. The incredible performance put Crossen in a tie for most goals scored on the Cape thus far this season and he has a total of 25 points in all, ranking him 3rd. More importantly, Crossen’s effort ensured that the Crusaders will be heading to the postseason as the victory over a tough Wareham team earned the CCA/Tech kids a trip to the postseason.
