Even with dismal weather and poor field conditions, this pair of Cape Cod high school athletes braved the elements over the past week to put up some pretty impressive performances and both athletes paced their respective programs to quick, albeit superlative 3-0 records.
Sandwich High School’s Alec Henderson, a junior attacker, nearly made it a perfect trifecta against Weymouth when he netted four goals in a 10-9 win last Wednesday, a performance that came on the heels of a pair of five-goal games. In the Blue Knights’ season-opener against Silver Lake, held against the backdrop of hulking snowbanks and constant flurries, Henderson poured in five goals and followed that with a five-goal, one-assist performance against Barnstable the ensuing Monday. All totaled, Henderson netted 14 goals in a week’s worth of Blue Knight lacrosse victories. While just three wins to open the season may not seem like much of a historical marker, what was historic about Henderson’s output was that his first five-goal effort came in the first-ever official varsity lacrosse game at DeConto Stadium, a moment worth remembering for years to come.
Joining Henderson as Capecod.com’s first spring Athlete of the Week was a scrapper of a tennis player, Barnstable High School senior co-captain Sonny Bisazza. The number one singles player for the Red Raiders for three straight seasons, Barnstable has done nothing but win since Bisazza joined the varsity tennis program in the 8th grade. A five-time varsity letterman, Bisazza has helped lead the Red Raiders to four straight Old Colony League championship titles (Barnstable has won the league 11 straight times since 2004) and is roughly 71-9 since he joined the squad.
Now at 3-0 and with Bisazza and the rest of the Red Raiders unbeaten to date, there’s a good bet that the Red Raiders want a chance for revenge against a BC High team that spelled a one-point difference last spring in spoiling what was a perfect season in the state south sectional title match.
