HYANNIS — With high school boys’ golf the only sport that officially kicked off the 2015 autumn season last week, it seemed only fitting that a pair of local varsity golfers should be selected as our first Capecod.com Athletes of the Week.
But there was a catch.
The top two golfers who came in as medalists in last Thursday’s golf matches between Cape Cod Tech and St. John Paul II and Sturgis East and Sturgis West, were both young women.
While Sturgis West defeated Sturgis East in team play, it was junior captain Emily Rodricks from Sturgis East who defeated West’s first flight male golfer Samar Ghai and took home the medal for East’s only win of the day. Rodricks, who helped lead East to its first-ever Cape & Islands League title last fall as a sophomore, shot a five-over-par 40 at the Hyannis Golf Course in the par-35 match.
Meanwhile, down Cape at Ocean Edge, St. John Paul II’s freshman Kristina Thimme followed suit as the medalist for the Lions in a tough upset against Cape Cod Tech. Thimme, who shot the day’s low score of 43, was the bright spot for the Lions on the afternoon in her 5.5-3.5 victory over Tech Captain Jon Spahr.
