BRIDGEWATER – Barnstable High’s boys’ lacrosse team (1-2) fell behind 4-3 in the first quarter and then Bridgewater-Raynham went on a goal-scoring binge the Red Raiders simply could not recover from as the host Trojans took the key Maritime League victory Monday afternoon, 17-9. It was the first league match-up of the season for both teams.
Down 4-3 after the first quarter, Barnstable watched Bridgewater-Raynham build a relentless attack on goal, amplifying the lead by eight more goals at the half for a 12-4 advantage.
“We didn’t score a goal after that for like eight or nine minutes,” Barnstable head coach Chris Whidden said of the early as well as hefty disadvantage. “And it was just too much.”
Senior Mike McDonough and junior Brener DeSouza each had a hat trick for the Red Raiders, but the Trojans’ attack duo of seniors Gavin Perry and Travis Reid doubled that output, each with six goals in the affair.
Barnstable’s Jack Pipatti, Reece Hoppensteadt and Liam Shields each added solo goals for the Red Raiders. Barnstable’s goalie Nick Passalugo made 13 saves.
Bridgewater-Raynham’s defense succeeded in keeping Barnstable’s usually prolific offense out of sync with senior goalie Anthony Keyes and defensemen Matt Clement, Danny Sullivan and Matt Sheehan key components of staving off a sustainable Red Raider comeback in the second half.
Barnstable won seven straight Maritime League titles from 2007 through 2013 but last year fell short to B-R twice. The Trojans’ win Monday afternoon over the Red & White made it three straight.
Barnstable Girls’ Laxwomen Can’t Find An Answer in Loss to Lady Trojans
HYANNIS — The Barnstable High girls’ lacrosse team (0-3) is loaded with athletic talent but it simply wasn’t enough to notch that first victory Monday afternoon as the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham girls captured the victory, 14-7.
B-R junior Nicole Geraghty was the offensive pace-setter for the visitors, netting half of her team’s goals with seven scores.
Barnstable co-captain Emma Glover led the Red Raiders with three goals and Callie Rogorzenski netted a pair, but it was not enough to fend off the Trojan attack.
Danielle Derosier and Olivia Pearsall also scored for Barnstable.
