Blue Knights’ “Downtown” Downes Makes It Rain in Win Over Clippers

SANDWICH – You just don’t want to leave him open.

Highlighted by his seven straight three-pointers, Sandwich High School senior co-captain Joey Downes poured in a game-high 28 points last night to pace his Blue Knights to a 79-60 win over the visiting Falmouth High Clippers.

Falmouth’s top gun Eric Demers nearly matched Downes’ effort, though, with 27 points of his own, but one hot hand has simply not been nearly enough against the 15-1 Sandwich Five this season. Junior stalwart Andrew Galanek dumped in 14 points and senior co-captain Scotty Reels tacked on an additional 10 points to round things off for the Atlantic Coast League champs.

After three quarters and a 70-40 lead, Sandwich head coach Dennis Green emptied his bench en route to the 79-60 finale.

“Our press gave us some early steals,” Green said. “And we built a 70-40 lead after three. The starters sat the 4th.”

Falmouth head coach Paul Lundberg, whose Clippers had just come off a big win over Barnstable the night before, has faced a grueling schedule the past week with games virtually every other day. All Lundberg could say about the loss to the tough Sandwich squad?

“They shot lights out.”

The Blue Knights hit the road and head down Cape tonight for a 7:00 pm match-up in Eastham against the Nauset Regional Warriors.

Falmouth, now 6-11, welcomes Boston Latin tomorrow night at 6:30 pm.
