Blaze, Brodd and Shibles Crowned Sectional Champions

NEWTON – It was almost too harrowing to watch, Barnstable High boys’ tennis head coach said of Sunday’s MIAA South Sectional doubles’ championship at Newton North High School.

Pitted against each other in the sectional championship Sunday afternoon, the Barnstable High boys’ doubles teams comprised of top seed Donnie Brodd and Cooper Blaze squared off

against teammates Daniel Dettinger-Klemm and Cooper Hesse and for all intents and purposes it was a barnburner of a match.

The final? Brodd and Blaze were crowned 2015 MIAA South Sectional Champions after defeating Dettinger-Klemm and Hesse, 7-5, 7-5.

“Every set they have played against each other (this season) has been either 7-5 or 7-6,” Barnstable High Head Coach Mike Sarney said. “Not much else I can say since I couldn’t bear to watch. I’m so proud of both teams.”

Brodd and Hesse will now advance to the state championship next week in Shrewsbury.

But while Barnstable High’s two boys’ doubles teams were busy hammering the neon, felt green orb back and forth, vying for sectional supremacy against each other, Red Raider number one singles man Tyler Shibles was busy snagging some hardware for himself.

Shibles faced Silver Lake’s Julian Tim Khayiat Sunday morning in the south sectional championship match and it was perhaps one of the most difficult wins in the Red Raider singles player’s career. Shibles defeated Khayiat in the first set, 6-3, then took Khayiat returned the favor with a 7-6 (8) victory sending the match to a third and deciding set. Shibles did it.

Only a junior, Shibles took the third set for all the marbles, 6-4.

“Tyler was unbelievable,” Coach Sarney said. “Both guys (Shibles and Khayiat) fought hard and hit amazing ground strokes. The difference was both guys got cranky on their serves and Tyler held his at four-all in the third and broke Tim for the win.”

Shibles will also be heading to Shrewsbury to vie for the state individual championship title.

The Barnstable girls’ doubles team, however, did not prevail Sunday at Old Rochester Regional High School in the ladies’ version of the MIAA South Sectional championship match.

Apponequet’s Addie Kendall and Shawna Walker defeated Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall in the first set, 6-1, then Berler and Cornwall came back with a hard-earned, 6-4 win but in the third and deciding set, the Apponequet girls prevailed, 7-5.

Still, both Old Colony League champion Barnstable teams (girls and boys) have team sectional play coming up in June.

“Oh yeah,” a resilient Barnstable High girls’ tennis head coach Lou Giglio said of his team’s upcoming postseason bid.
