Temporary Fix to Sagamore Beach Cliff Erosion in the Works

BOURNE- An eroding cliff jeopardizing half a dozen homes by Crab Rock Way and Indian Trail in Sagamore Beach is once again grabbing the attention of local officials.

“This area has certainly in years past has been subject to some pretty severe erosion and now we are looking at a situation where the slope has really reached a point of steepness where it is basically un-stable,” said Jack Vaccaro, Senior Scientist for Project Epsilon Associates of Maynard.

After months of failed negotiation between the town, local courts, and residents for a more permanent fix, a “soft solution” to the problem has now been formulated to help curb the issue.

The process will involve the use of giant coir logs filled with sand being placed along the base of the cliff, in addition to re-vegetation to prevent further erosion that is endangering the homes.

This move would stop yards slipping to as little as six feet from the edge of the cliff.

“What’s happening right now is when these large storms strike from the North East, the waves are essentially breaking at the toe of that bank and removing material.”

“What happens is the land above that slides down ultimately resulting in slope failure,” adds Vaccaro.

A motion to move the project along to the conservation commission was unanimously approved by the selectmen at the latest town meeting.

The board’s approval to have the project moved on to the conservation commission did not come with any approval by the selectmen of the project itself, only to have it presented to the commission for its review and potential approval.

According to recent reports, all costs associated with this fix would be covered by the homeowners with no financial impact to the town.

No word yet on when work crews will break ground on the project.
