BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Commission is looking to bring together stakeholders from communities across the county to develop a data-rich tool for coastal resiliency planning.
Beginning December 11, a series of meetings will be held in water body subregions to create regional working groups to share interests and concerns.
The stakeholder subregions are Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay and the Outer Cape.
“We are primarily looking to accomplish looking at the environmental and the socioeconomic effects of different resiliency strategies,” said Erin Perry, the special projects manager for the Cape Cod Commission.
“We will talk in the stakeholder meetings about issues that each of the sections of coastline across the region are facing.”
Perry said they are really looking to identify the impacts of different strategies for addressing the issues are.
“The end game is to develop a coastal resiliency planning tool that will allow communities to look at all of their options,” she said.
“The options included in the tool will range anywhere from retreat in particular areas where development may not be appropriate or is highly at risk all the way up to more infrastructure-related strategies like sea walls and revetments.”
The effort is being funded through a three-year, $780,000 grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Cape Cod Commission is the lead agency for the project and is working with regional partners, including the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Preserve and the Town of Barnstable.
Other agencies participating include the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Program, the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown and the state’s Office of Coastal Zone Management.
