Spaulding Rehab Renovations Completed in Sandwich

SANDWICH – The $6.3 million overall to the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Sandwich was completed earlier this year, and the facility is now ready to face the growing needs of Cape residents for years to come.

The expansion included the addition of a 6,230 square foot space that houses more therapy rooms, as well as a large multi-purpose room that will be utilized for group activities.

The facility currently has a number of group activities including yoga, meditation and arthritis and back pain classes, and will soon feature a new addition for Parkinson’s patients that wouldn’t have been possible without the expansion.

“We’re in the process of establishing a new Parkinson’s program for higher-level people and it’s a rock-steady boxing program, so hopefully that’ll happen in the next six months to year,” said Laurie Crocker, SCC Physical Therapy Supervisor.

The number of Cape residents age 65 and over is expected to more than double by 2030, and while the expansion will help facilitate the needs of the elderly, the expansion project will benefit Cape Codders of all ages.

“It’s not just with the growing needs of the older population,” said Stephanie Nadolny, Vice President of Hospital Operations. “But with sports injuries as well as concussion and really a wide variety of diagnoses that we feel most able to treat here on the Cape that the demands just keeps growing.”

Currently, SCC’s staff cares for about 1,100 inpatients and provides more than 100,000 outpatient therapy and physician visits annually. The expansion will allow SCC to provide nearly 80,000 more therapy visits and 10,500 more physician visits over the next five years.
