BARNSTABLE – Two healthcare systems with services in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island are in partnership discussions.
Southcoast Health System, Inc., which operates Tobey Hospital in Wareham, Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, and Care New England Health System, which provides services throughout Rhode Island, are working toward forming one of New England’s largest not-for-profit, community-based health care systems.
The two organizations have signed a Letter of Intent to engage in exclusive discussions to work towards forming a new parent organization that would encompass both systems.
The new organization would be dedicated to the advancement of population health and delivering community-based care.
The possible partnership would incorporate eight hospitals, a large network of ambulatory sites, two Accountable Care Organizations and more than 1,700 physicians and providers.
The partnership would also continue the academic relationship Care New England and Southcoast Health currently have with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Southcoast has long been focused on providing the very best care within our region of southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, finding ways to remain highly competitive, cost effective and at the forefront of technological and strategic change,” said Keith Hovan, president and CEO of Southcoast Health, in a press release. “We believe that Southcoast can be a strong and complementary partner for Care New England, and that together our respective organizations could form the foundation of a highly competitive, community-based and value-driven integrated health care system throughout southern New England.”
Care New England chose Southcoast Health as a possible partner after conducting a request for proposals process.
