SANDWICH – The beach re-nourishment project at Town Neck Beach in Sandwich will get underway this week.
Sand from a dredging project in the Cape Cod Canal will be used to reinforce the beach.
Town Manager Bud Dunham said the project will cost the town $1.8 million and took years to arrange.
The beach, its parking lot and Wood Avenue Extension will all be closed and blockaded while the project is completed, a process Dunham said he was told could take only three weeks.
With this major step forward, Dunham said a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
“The volume of erosion we’ve had, there’s parts of town that would be in jeopardy,” he said. “This hopefully will give us a bit of a buffer, it’s a sense of relief.”
The project needs to be finished by the end of March because environmental windows that the dredging company needs to work in, but Dunham said it shouldn’t be an issue.
Town meeting voters approved an additional $600,000 in Community Preservation Funds towards the project earlier this month after bids for the work came in higher than expected.
Previous funds of $1.2 million were approved in September.
