SANDWICH – Residents and visitors to Sandwich are now being greeted by larger than life starfish on display in front of a number of local businesses and public spaces.
The installation is a partnership between the local business community and the Sandwich Arts alliance and includes 20 three-by-three foot sculptures uniquely designed by local artisans.
Carolyn LeComte is the creator of the Sandwich Starfish project, “I imagined that a great way to get our name and face out there and to work in communion with local businesses and organizations would be to engage in a public art project of our own.”
The public is being invited to pick-up a Starfish Trail map available at numerous locations across town, including the Sandwich Visitors Center on Route 130.
Following the trail will take participants to an array of local shops, restaurants, and historic sites where visitors can post a photo of themselves with their favorite starfish.
“The idea took hold immediately within the steering committee,” LeComte explains, “Then we had to decide what our image would be. Mermaids, fish, boats were all discussed, but the starfish seemed to fit our needs and the image of Sandwich best.”
The installation’s mascot “Stella the Starfish” was introduced at last month’s Sandwich Fest 2017, and will also be making her way through town in her trademark feather boa and sunglasses. Folks of all ages are welcome to “Catch a Starfish” and take their picture with Stella as they encounter her at the town’s signature events.
The 2017 Starfish Trail will also include starfish photo cut-outs, coloring contests, and musical performances throughout the summer for local and visiting families to enjoy.
The display will remain in place through Labor Day, at which time the 20 starfish will be auctioned to the highest bidder with all funds raised to benefit the Sandwich Arts Alliance.
LeComte hopes that this project will be a hit for the community, “Hopefully we will garner enough interest, both locally and with tourists, that out end-of summer auction will be successful and profitable for the Sandwich Art Alliance.”
