Runway Construction Begins at Hyannis Airport

Barnstable Municipal Airport is using the former Mildred’s Chowder House property on Route 28 in Hyannis for a staging site for runway repaving.

HYANNIS – A runway reconstruction project in underway at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis.

Crews are working to repave Runway 15-33 in eight phases.

Airport Manager Bud Breault said the last large projects of a slow upgrade to the whole facility are reconstructing the two runways.

“The pavement is over 20 years old on both of them, and one is in worse condition than the other so that is why we are doing Runway 15-33 first,” Breault said.

The repaving work is expected to cause impacts to air operations at the airport.

“Sometimes both runways may be closed for short periods of time,” Breault said. “Or we’ll have shorter runways or one runway depending on what we are doing at the time.”

The work is expected to be completed by mid- to late-October.

The airport is using the former Mildred’s Chowder House property on Route 28 as a staging site for the first three phases of the project.

“You’ll see a lot of activity over there for a couple of months and then it will shift to another location at the airport,” Breault said.

Other safety repairs and changes will be made to meet FAA requirements, including realigning multiple taxiways and adding safety stubs off the runways.

“We’re also putting in LED lights everywhere throughout the airport that we are permitted to do so to bring up our airport up to speed and be more energy efficient,” Breault said.

The airport received almost $6.3 million in grants from the FAA for the rehabilitation of the runway and taxiway repairs and realignment.

The total cost of the work is about $7.5 million.
