August 6, 1928 – August 11, 2017
Kay’s family celebrates the life she loved. She started her life overlooking the beautiful view of Oyster Pond, in
Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her parents were Byron
and Winnifred Mitchell.
She graduated from Halifax Business College where she studied accounting. This lead to a job with the Royal Bank of Canada. From there, she went to Montreal as a financial advisor with the bank. She transferred to a bank in Greenland, where she met her husband, Jack, who was stationed there with the US Air Force. She lived with him in Germany, Cape Cod, Netherlands, and England, as well as several states. They always returned to Cape Cod, making Falmouth their home.
One of her greatest loves was to travel, which she did extensively.
She went all across Canada and the US, as well as all over Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Kay volunteered with the Red Cross for 31 years. She served at Falmouth’s “Around the Table” for 13 years and volunteered with the IRS doing taxes at Falmouth’s Service Center for 18 years.
Kay is survived by her daughter Michele Sheridan and her husband Jack Anderson of Centerville MA, daughter Jacqueline Clauson and her husband Alfred of Nokomis FL, daughter Nicole Wilson and her husband Mark of Woburn MA, grandson and daughter-in-law Kevin Sheridan and Robin Jacks, granddaughter Cameron Clauson, and granddaughter Cecelia Wilson.
She also leaves her brother John Mitchell and wife Adele of Halifax Nova Scotia, her sister Margaret Roberts and husband Fred of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, her sister Ethel Myers of Glenburnie, Ontario, and her sister Francis Vining of San Diego CA, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Kay enjoyed the company of several cats throughout the course of her life and took great pleasure in their company.
As her daughters, along with her extended family and many friends, we will always remember her spirit of independence and adventure, her graciousness in all situations, her ability to see the good in everything, her interest in the world, and the humor and light she brought to every single moment. We are extraordinarily grateful and will carry this legacy forward.
“Farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea bound coast, let your mountains dark and dreary be, for when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed, will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me”.
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to Falmouth Hospital, JML Care Center, and the VNA Hospice of Cape Cod for the excellent compassionate care that our mother received.
In lieu of flowers, people are invited to make donations to Falmouth People for Cats, Falmouth Around the Table, or the charity of their choice.
A family memorial will be held in Nova Scotia at a later date. God Speed Mom. That hill overlooking Oyster Pond awaits you.
