Post Office Cancels Delivery

post officeBARNSTABLE – With roads clogged with snow, the United States Post Office cancelled service in the entire commonwealth of Massachusetts today.

Service is expected to resume tomorrow, according to US Postal Service spokeswoman Melissa Lohnes.

Lohnes said as of noon Tuesday that she expected service to resume on Wednesday.

She said cancelling service throughout an entire state is unusual. The reason, she said, is concern for the safety of both the postal workers and customers, who might venture out to their post office boxes in dangerous conditions if mail service was available.

In New England, mail delivery and retail services were curtailed today in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Southern Maine and three zip code areas in Southern Vermont.
