HYANNIS – Local efforts to move the Cape’s Registry of Motor Vehicles office from South Yarmouth to Hyannis are still on track and the project has been included in MassDOT’s proposed Capital Investment Plan for 2019-2023.
Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir said they have been planning to relocate the RMV to the Hyannis Transportation Center for a few years and that the undersecretary of transportation assured him that it will happen.
“They are sort of juggling how to do,” Cahir said, “I’m anticipating that this will probably be more publicly announced in the next 6 months or so for the next year.”
Cahir said indepth designs of the project have been completed which would construct an addition to the current Hyannis Transportation Center.
“We’ve tweaked it a number of times after regular discussions with AECOM and the registry.” Cahir said. “We’ve met in Boston on several occasions about it.”
Cahir said he was hoping for an announcement from the Administration in the late summer of fall.
Local legislators including State Representative Will Crocker (R-Centerville) and Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr (D-Truro) are working to advance the project.
“It’s definitely going to happen,” Cahir said. “I’ve got kind of assurances from state officials on that, but there was some sort of glitch in terms of identifying necessary funding from the state for this fiscal year.”
