SANDWICH – A “60 in 60” campaign has begun in Sandwich.

The town’s chamber of commerce needs to raise $60,000 for a new welcome center, which would double as the chamber office, before the land lease expires on August 1.

Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jay Pateakos says he wants the town to make a better first impression.

“We need an image of Sandwich where people stop. They feel welcome. They want to come back, and that’s what a new visitor’s center would do.” he said. “It would provide bathrooms for people and it would provide more brochures.”

Pateakos says the biggest issue with the current shed-sized building is the lack of bathrooms.

“The biggest thing is that there would be bathrooms inside the visitor’s center,” he said. “Right now the existing visitor’s center we have is so small that we have a Port-a-John out back. It’s not the image I want people coming into Sandwich for the first time to see.”

Pateakos said that it is tough to find volunteers to work at the current center past 2 p.m. and that the new building would house the chamber of commerce office which would have staff on location until 5 p.m.

Donation checks can be made to the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce or the Sandwich Legacy Foundation and can be mailed to PO Box 744, Sandwich, MA 02563.

Donations can also be made online here.
