WELLFLEET – Teenagers will once again have the opportunity to receive training this summer through the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Junior Lifeguard Program.
The 13- to 17-year-old boys and girls chosen to participate will learn CPR, first aid, and lifeguard training through the free program which promotes water safety and job-specific training on Cape Cod.
Past junior lifeguards currently work for the National Seashore and many other Cape Cod towns.
Participants who will be 15 years old or older before the end of the program who complete all the requirements will received American Red Cross certifications in the training areas.
The program runs from July 5 through August 9 and meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Marconi Beach.
Participants must be able to complete a one-third mile open ocean swim followed by an immediate half-mile run on the first day of the program.
Junior lifeguards will learn a range of topics beyond lifeguard training, including a session taught by the National Park Service wildland firefighters. Other sessions may be conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and NPS law enforcement rangers.
The program includes arduous physical activity, sometimes in high surf conditions. Participants may swim in rip currents and complete beach runs up to five miles.
Individuals interested in applying for the program must contact Gordon Miller, the North District Head Lifeguard at 508-487-2100 extension 0913 or by email to [email protected] to schedule a pre-course interview and to register.
About 18 applicants will be selected as junior lifeguards.
