The Nantucket Whaling Museum has a new exhibit on the fate of the whale ship Essex.

NANTUCKET – The Nantucket Historical Association will be holding a Member Thursdays event at the Whaling Museum on Broad Street later this month.

All of the museum’s galleries and special exhibits will be open for viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 28.

A special tour of the historical association’s new major exhibit will be led at 6 p.m. by the association’s Robyn and John Davis and Chief Curator Michael Harrision.

The exhibit, Stove by a Whale: 20 Men, 3 Boats, 96 Days, tells the story of the ill-fated Nantucket whaleship Essex that was struck by a whale in the Pacific Ocean in 1820 and served as the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

Nantucket Historical Association Membership Coordinator Molly McIlvaine hopes everyone can come to the museum to witness the museum’s display of Nantucket’s unique history.

Member Thursdays are free for current NHA members and tickets for the general public are $10 for adults, youth tickets are $5 for 6 to 17-year-olds and free for children under 6.
