HYANNIS – St. John Paul II High School Head Football Coach John Muldoon has resigned as teacher and coach in order to take a position in higher education.

Muldoon, Athletic Director Mark Santos and Head of School Christopher Keavy made the announcement at a players meeting on Wednesday.

“First and foremost, I express my gratitude and appreciation to Coach Muldoon for his hard work, passion, and love for the school and its students,” said Keavy. “Coach Muldoon is the only varsity coach the school has known and has given six years of excellence on and off the field. John has forever left his mark on JPII athletics.”

For the 2016 season, veteran coordinators Mike Delaney and David Harrison will lead the Lions as interim CoHead Coaches.

The school will seek a permanent Head Coach following the season.

“Coach Muldoon has led the football program to competitive excellence while also establishing high standards of conduct and integrity on and off the field,” added Mark Santos, JPII Athletic Director. “Coach Delaney and Harrison are strong leaders who will maintain the high standards we have achieved.”

During Muldoon’s tenure, the Lions posted a record of 3718 in six varsity seasons.

The team qualified for the MIAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015 and earned Central Catholic League Titles in 2014 and 2015.

“I thank the administration, staff, families, and students who I have been blessed to work with for the past six years,” said Muldoon. “I am sad to step away from St. John Paul II High School and I will miss the many people who have become my family. I will miss the students and the relationships of our football players and coaching staff. The football program is in great shape and I know it will continue to be one of the best small school programs. I am most proud of the reputation our football program has on and off of the field. Our student athletes are always respectful and work hard in and out of the classroom. I look forward to following the continued success of the program.”
