HYANNIS – Opening day for the Cape Cod Baseball League took place Monday night with five games across the Cape.

One team, the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, held a special ceremony before the start of their game to dedicate their new ball park to Judy Walden Scarafile.

Scarafile, who served the League in various capacities for over 45 years, has her name engraved on top of the the new scoreboard in right-center field.

“It’s very hard to come up with the right words, its humbling, it’s an honor, its disbelief, it’s crazy, and I really haven’t come up with the right words yet,” said Scarafile.

“Today, when I watched the top part with my name on it go up on the scoreboard, I got pretty emotional. It hasn’t sunk in.”

The event celebrated everyone who helped make the project possible and ended with a ceremonial first pitch from Scarafile.

The field, located at St. John Paul II High School, has been fully refurbished with $700,000 from the town of Barnstable and $100,000 from the Yawkey Foundation.

The main goal of the project was to improve the drainage system at the field.

“The field for many years had been in disrepair and it had been getting worse and worse and the Hyannis athletic association new they had to do something,” said Scarafile.

“The project began 2 and a half years ago and it was a long slow process in the beginning and then it got jump started when the town approved the $700,000, without that it never would have happened.”

The field is also important for tourism in Hyannis as it is a destination within walking distance from downtown and Hyannis Harbor.
