BARNSTABLE – A local animal advocacy group is calling to an end of an area hunting competition targeting coyotes.
In 2017, Powderhorn Outfitters, a Hyannis gun shop, launched its first coyote hunting contest on the Cape They award prizes for the heaviest coyote and the largest coyote killed by men, women, and youth.
Friends of Cape Wildlife are hoping to draw community support to end the contest which wrapped up their second event just last month.
A similar event is annually held by Fairview Sportsmens Club in Granby, MA.
Senator Julian Cyr and Representative Sarah Peake have been working as well with the Department of Fish and Wildlife to get a meeting scheduled on the Cape regarding the coyotes and particularly the local shooting contest.
The first such meeting will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at Cape Cod Community College’s Science Building. A second meeting is planned for June.
