CHATHAM – The Mitchell River Bridge between Stage Harbor Road and Main Street in Chatham has been reopened Monday afternoon after emergency repairs.
Town officials last week announced that the bridge would stay in the closed position until further notice because of ongoing problems associated with the weather.
The span, made of wood and steel, has been expanding and contracting in the hot humid weather.
That was making it nearly impossible to close the bridge once it was opened for boat traffic.
MassDOT engineers were called in to address the problem.
