Chatham Fish Pier Observation Deck Still Off-Limits

CHATHAM – Reconstruction of the popular observation deck at the Chatham Fish Pier will not be complete in time for the July 4th holiday.

Chatham Director of Natural Resources Robert Duncanson met with town staff Tuesday, including the town manager, town engineer and construction company representatives to review the project

Substantial progress has been made to provide a safe working environment for fish offloading.

But the observation deck has still not been put back in place.

That means one of the town’s most visited locations for tourists won’t be available for at least several more weeks.

“Town officials and the contractor agreed that fish-off-loading activities conducted in a safe, healthy environment is the main priority,” said Duncanson in a statement.

The meeting on Tuesday discussed progress to date, remaining work and the status of off-site fabrication of deck components.

They also reviewed the ability of the contractor to work safely around fish off-loading operations or during hours that off-loading operations are not occurring.

The contractor, Sciaba Construction, is reviewing a proposed schedule for remaining work relative to fish off-loading activity, which is expected to ramp up over the coming days.

Work should be substantially completed in that area by July 19th

The next progress meeting will held on Tuesday, July 9th .
