HYANNIS – More than 200 people unloaded from the Cape Flyer’s first run of the season from South Station to Hyannis Friday night.
Cape Cod Transit Authority Administrator Thomas Cahir said he was glad to see people excited to be on a train again.
“It’s the same sort of enthusiasm that I’ve seen in the past two years. People are enjoying the beautiful scenic vistas through West Barnstable. It couldn’t be better. There were well over 200 people on the train from South Station and we couldn’t be happier,” Cahir said.
Train arrived in Hyannis at 8:15 Friday night and left at 9 p.m. for Boston. It runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day.
Two new operational improvements on the train this year include fewer stops in the Boston area on the Friday night trip and a new stop in Brockton.
The train makes stops on the South Shore and in Buzzards Bay.
Michael Diorio and Louisa Paine of Brookline had just completed a bike ride around the Cape and Islands and caught the 9 p.m. train back to Boston.
“We love that this train is bike-friendly. If we had to bike all the way back to Boston again it would have added that much more time to the trip,” Paine said.
While Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of train service for the season, ridership builds to the July 4th weekend. Last year on the July 4th holiday weekend, nearly 2,000 people took the Cape Flyer train to and from the Cape.
In the inaugural year of the service in 2013, 2,300 people rode the train between Boston and Hyannis. The 2013 service included an additional day of trains since the 4th fell on a Thursday.
