HYANNIS – The symbolic “end-of-summer” weekend also closed with another end to a cycle in local public transport.
The final run of the Cape Flyer, a seasonal weekend train which runs from South Station in Boston to Hyannis with stops in the South Shore, departed, Boston bound, sharply at 6:40 Monday night.
It’s run by the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA), which coordinates the train’s arrival in Hyannis with the ferries out of Hyannis Harbor, taxi companies, Uber and CCRTA buses so that Cape-bound passengers have a means to their local destination once they step off the flyer.
CCRTA Human Services Transportation Director Kathy Jensen made small talk with her station coworkers Monday night as the final train pulled in, remarking how fast the end of the season came.
She said she felt a similar sense of pre-nostalgia emanating from the train’s regulars earlier in the weekend.
“We have our regular Friday night crew, like Jerry and Stan; I was here Friday night to greet them and they had some roses for me,” she said. “I think it’s really taken off.”
It was the fourth season in a row the flyer offered service to and from the city.
Jensen said that their preliminary numbers show an increase in ridership from last year.
The 2015 season generated over $180,000 in revenue.
I still wish they would run it the other way also, even if it has to go on weekdays. Cape people would LOVE to have this nice easy way to get to Boston for a day or two! Please consider adding a route for us to be able to do that next year!!
This train really needs funding and should run at least daily during the week and several times on the weekend.
