HYANNIS – Barnstable County has finished its 25th season of dredging with the completion of the outer channel of Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich.
The county dredge program, started in 1995, has dredged over 2,338,676 cubic yards of sand from almost every channel and harbor on Cape Cod, said county officials.
Officials also said that it was a record-breaking season for its program, with about 150,000 cubic yards removed from Cape channels.
“This season was a tremendous accomplishment for the crew,” said Ken Cirillo, Director of the county dredge program in a statement.
“They worked ten months in all weather conditions along with a variety of COVID-19 challenges and restrictions to complete these projects.”
Crews of the dredging vessels include Superintendent Jason Bevis, Leverman Chris Armstrong and Cory Fleming, Maintenance Engineer Rich Randall, Forman Tanner Daily and Deckhands Andrew DiPietro and Zachary Tivey.
The largest of the dredging projects undertaken this year was the Dead Neck/Sampson’s Island project, with 43,955 cubic yards dredged.
“Except for the Bass River project that we could not complete due to ‘time of the year’ restrictions, we are pleased that every other project was finished, and we met all targets for volumes of sand needing to be dredged,” said Barnstable County Administrator Elizabeth Albert in a statement.
