Cape Cod Healthcare Breaks Ground on New Patient Tower

HYANNIS – Cape Cod Healthcare broke ground Monday on a new six story Patient Tower Project that is set for completion by the end of 2022.

A private event was held at the hospital to celebrate the occasion.

“We planned this with the very thought that for 98 or 99 percent of the time all of your healthcare needs can be met right here on Cape Cod and that’s what our vision and mission is and our commitment to our community. We want to be here when our community needs us most,” said Michael Lauf, President and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare.

“By investing in these key services and facilities we will make sure that happens,” he said.

Cape Cod Healthcare plans to invest $180 million in the future of Cape Cod through the new 6-floor patient care tower at Cape Cod Hospital.

The project will upgrade the cancer and cardiology programs and increase the number of beds from 259 to 299.

It also includes the development of a fully integrated single electronic medical records system, a rooftop garden to help patients with mental health needs, outdoor patios, and 30 chemotherapy bays with space for as many as 48 eventually.

The investments reflect Cape Cod Healthcare’s focus on keeping more patients on this side of the bridge and meeting 21st Century needs of the community.

“I’m excited for the people on the Cape that are going to be able to get lifesaving care right here, treatments that they desperately need right here,” said Lauf.

“People no longer have to wonder ‘if’ they’ll know we can do it and that’s what is so exciting about who we are and where we’re going.”

The tower will occupy roughly 140,000 square feet between the Mugar Building and the Gleason House on Lewis Bay Road.

Demolition of the Whitcomb Pavilion will begin next month with the behavioral health unit moving to Cape Cod Hospital.

Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2020, pending approval from the Cape Cod Commission.

The 1st and 2nd floors are expected to be open in early 2022 for cancer treatment.

The entire Patient Tower is set to be completed in late 2022, with sights set on the fall of 2022.
