COTUIT – An exhibition dedicated to the American art form of bird carving and its history will be on display in Cotuit beginning later this month.
“At Rest, In Flight: Cape Cod Bird Carving” will be featured at the Cahoon Museum of American Art from August 23 to October 8.
The exhibit will include objects which range from functional decoys used in hunting to art pieces which are highly prized by collectors.
Artists featured in the exhibition are considered masters in the field, including Elmer Crowell and Eldridge Arnold.
“At Rest, In Flight” chronicles the stories and individual styles by carvers in the early 20th century through today.
The exhibition also highlights the carvings by regional and Cape Cod artists.
A free public reception with artists will be held Friday, August 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the museum on Route 28.
Programs related to the exhibition will also be held, including a bird carving demonstration on September 12 and a gallery talk from guest curator Eric Kaiser on September 21.
