YARMOUTH – A popular spot in Yarmouth is getting a face lift before the height of the summer tourist season.
Construction to upgrade the Bass River Fish Pier is underway and the town’s Director of Natural Resources Karl von Hone hopes the work will be completed before the Summer Kick Off Celebration.
“The whole area is being re-decked – new railings, new benches – all being put on the structure that was built nearly 31 years ago,” von Hone said.
Improvements are also being made to the lighting and water systems, along with one notable addition
“It will be more handicapped accessible for those that are in wheelchairs and needing more assistance,” von Hone said. “Several of the rails are going to be lower so it will be easier for those folks to be able to utilize the facility – very similar to the Wilbur Park Fish Pier up river.”
Von Hone said the under supports of the pier were all inspected and were in good shape.
The construction costs will be close to $70,000 which will be funded through grants from the state’s recreational saltwater fishing licenses.
“So those who fish in the saltwater are now seeing some direct return to the town of Yarmouth and their activity at the Bass River Fish Pier,” von Hone said.
The construction contract runs through June 30, but von Hone hopes the work will be completed a week prior in time for the kick off.
