HYANNIS – The true tale of an East Coast witch will be depicted through a ballet performance next weekend at Barnstable High School.
The Cape Conservatory presents “Legend of the Witch, Moll Dyer” on Saturday, January 12 at 3 p.m.
The performance features two professional ballet dancers, along with pre-professional performers from the Conservatory’s Repertoire Class.
Artistic Director Jane Caputo wrote and choreographed the ballet to convey the story of a 17th Century witch who became an outcast for being different and, according to legend, still haunts the East Coast village where she lived.
As legend goes, Moll Dyer emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the 1600s. Her inability to fit in with local society caused great concern and hostility and when drought and a plague afflicted the region she was blamed by the villagers.
Caputo says the story is about bullying and intolerance, and what happened when society doesn’t accept people who are different.
Admission for the performance is $10 for adults and free for students. The show may not be suitable for children under six.
