BOURNE – More than two dozen addiction treatment experts from across the country were on Cape Cod this week to learn more about the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office’s efforts at curbing addiction in inmates.
Officials were looking at the department’s Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program. The Correctional Facility is one of six Department of Justice designated mentoring sites for addiction treatment programs.
The tours brought officials in from as far away as Guam and American Samoa.
“This model should be the template for all programs like it,” said Adam Rutherford, the Chief Mental Health Officer for the Alaska Department of Corrections.
“It’s about getting inmates to change their lives, as well as helping them prepare for release into the job market,” said Christian Benitez, a representative from Guam.
The Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program has been operating at the correctional facility for the last 21 years. The program runs out of a dedicated housing unit at the facility and includes educational and treatment components and peer-group interaction.
