If you’re looking to get your hands on a Cape Cod Screwball bracelet, you’re not alone.
Former teacher John Carey created the iconic, or should we say legendary jewelry, which spread across the world and even appeared on television.
Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky was given one by contestant Chris Lambton when she visited his hometown of Dennis.
Fans of the late 90s drama, Felicity, would have spotted Dennis-Yarmouth grad Amy Jo Johnson spotting one on the show.
The simple design of silver bracelet with a single gold ball doesn’t scream Cape Cod. There’s nothing nautical and no outlines of the Cape involved. But they serve as an iconic signifier to those in the know. One woman who grew up on the Cape told me that her bracelet is recognized when she travels by others who have ties to the Cape.
It seems that every bracelet has a special meaning. “My husband bought me my Cape Cod Bracelet 10 years ago when we were living in Western Mass,” says Angie Grabiec of Barnstable Village, “ It means so much to me because my best friends live on the Cape, I was married on the Cape and knew I would one day be living here! “
Each and every bracelet is made by hand at Eden Hand Arts.
There are imitators but the original is fit specially to your wrist and made by hand just as it’s been done for decades at this small shop. Now, Eden Hand Arts puts a small tag on each Cape Cod Screwball Bracelet. If you already own one, you can have a tag added for a small fee.
Sadly John Carey has passed away, but the tradition is being carried on by his daughter and son-in-law.
Eden Hand Arts opens this weekend when locals can beat the crowds. During the summer season June – Labor Day weekend you’ll need a reserve a shopping time. Tickets are free and issued to cut down on long lines and crowded shops. There is a window for the “Onesy Line.” It’s reserved for those who only want 1 item and know exactly what they want.
