One of the many summertime traditions on the Cape is meeting up with friends at the Barnstable County Fair. Did you know the Cape Cod Fairgrounds are open year round? Well, at least their office is! From expos to dog shows to truck shows, it takes a lot of work to keep things running. The next time you are there for an event, say thanks to the staff, and keep an eye out for Wendy Brown! Who is Wendy? Well let’s just grab a corn dog and a lemonade and find out a little about the woman behind the events!
Hello, My Name Is: Wendy Brown
Occupation: General Manager, Barnstable County Fairgrounds
What was your first paying job?
I was a dish washer at my parents Hotel & Restaurant. They paid me
When was the last time you laughed really hard?
Couple of weekends ago out on a boat with friends. Why? We dropped a fishing line in the water (yes I have a license) and ran out of bait so used roast beef from lunch. I then caught a catfish, reeled it on board and everytime it moved I screamed and laughed hysterically. My friend friend took the hook out for me.
Did you grow up on the Cape?
No. I grew up in Jay, Vermont. I came to the Cape looking for adventure and a town with more than 200 people and a grocery store within 25 minutes. I liked it here, so I stayed!
Where is your ‘go-to’ spot for a scoop of ice cream?
My Freezer… My favorite is Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia
Do you have a favorite non-profit group here on the Cape?
Rotary Club. As a former member I always admired the organization and its commitment to community good works and it’s International component that has done such amazing things around the world.
What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most?
I ski. I grew up in a ski town and was skiing by the time I was 2 years old. All the seasonal ski instructors stayed at our Inn so I always had a ride to the mountain. I remember one year one of the ski instructors staying was Ivana Winkelmayr, better known as Ivana Trump (before the Donald)!
In a parallel universe, what would you be doing?
A wealthy world traveler. Would love to see the whole world!
What person had the greatest influence on you?
My Grandfather. He was a soft spoken man with great wisdom. I spent most of my summers growing up in Nova Scotia at their summer house and was blessed to get to know him well. He had such great stories, he was an Olympian (hockey). When he passed away we got to read his journals and he spoke of his crush on Sonia Henne in the 1932 Olympics at Lake Placid. My Grandmother was not amused.
If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I see?
Half and half, every condiment known to man, wine and leftover corned beef dinner. I accidentally left freezer door open and had to cook off everything before it spoiled. Nothing says 4th of July like corned Beef!
If you could go out on a boat fishing for a day, who would you bring ?
Abraham Lincoln. I think he would be fascinating to talk. Such decisions he had to make. Also bet he could probably take a hook out of a fish!
